What makes a space unique? Is it the art that hangs on the walls or the design of the rug that lays on the floor? Is it the color of the room or the color of the furniture? All of these make a space unique because you chose it. Your personal taste, beliefs, and personality are all that make the room truly yours. In their collaboration with Hurray, the Gibbs sisters were asked questions about their personal tastes and inspirations. Let’s get to know what Chi and Gab Gibbs love!

Since you guys are both creatives, what are your areas of expertise, and what mediums do you usually use?

Chi: “Me, I’ve had my clothing brand for the past 6 years. Aside from designing clothes, I make the prints we use as well. I consider myself a textile designer and because of that, I feel like my area of expertise would have to be pattern and color. My go-to mediums are digital art, and acrylic paint for when I want to use a traditional medium.”

Gab: “Same goes for me, as a makeup artist and beauty producer, I work with a lot of colors and textures. Also having a background in digital arts and traditional painting, in college it’s really been easy for us to collaborate together on a lot of things. And lastly, we both work on music together.”

What inspires you to create?

Well, we get inspired by listening to music, watching movies, traveling, vintage magazines, photos, it could be anything.

What’s your favorite color, and why?

Green and peach tones are two colors that we both love. I think we gravitate towards these colors because they’re warm and calming, and they’re very versatile when it comes to matching with other colors.

What’s your design philosophy, and why?

When it comes to design, we always gravitate towards vintage. Our design process involves remixing and paying homage to certain eras. So when it comes to our design philosophy, we believe in upcycling and breeding new life into certain pieces, whether it be clothing or furniture, even with our music.

What’s your life mantra, and could you tell us an instance where this mantra has proven useful to you?

I think we live by the quote, “Life is too short for boring clothes, or anything boring for that matter.” It’s our philosophy in everything we do, and I think that’s why we’re known for our aesthetic because we’re not afraid to take risks.

As creatives, what advice can you give for young, creative professionals at a time like this?

It’s the best time to try things with your art that you’ve never done before. You don’t know what creative doors you might open.
