The Artistry of Interior Architecture: Blending Form and Function in Interior Design
Interior design is an artistic medium that blends form and function to create beautiful and functional spaces. While it may seem straightforward at first glance, designing an interior space is complex. It requires a deep understanding of various structural and design elements.
Interior design principles, rooted in architectural concepts, utilize seven key elements: form, color, light, line, pattern, texture, and space. These elements work in harmony to create balanced, proportionate spaces. Interior architecture refers to the foundation, spatial layout, and core finish, what we call the interior shell before furniture, lighting, and decors are added.
The quality of a space’s interior architecture significantly impacts the space’s functionality, aesthetics, and value. A well-designed shell provides the canvas for great interior design, influencing natural light, movement flow, and customization. The chosen finishes for walls, floors, and ceilings set the tone and dramatically affect the interior’s final look and feel, making the perfection of these elements important in interior architecture.
While interior design principles are universal, collaboration between architects, contractors, and interior designers can elevate a space to a whole new level. Work starts with architects who establish the structural foundation of the space, applying architectural principles to initial designs, redesigns, and adaptive reuse. Contractors then execute these plans, managing everything from material sourcing to labor coordination. Once construction is complete, interior designers come in to bring these cold shells to life, infusing style and functionality into the space to evoke emotion.
Interior architecture is the bridge between architecture and design. By blending their collective expertise, design professionals transform spaces into cohesive, and livable environments that significantly impact how people live.
An example of a successful collaboration between architects and interior designers is the work of Hurray with the Art Collector’s Paradise in San Fernando, Pampanga. Hurray has created an environment that influences relaxation through well-curated inspirational pieces, perfectly balanced with its architecture to remain approachable with its premium, contemporary, and clean finish.
Led by our Principal Designer, IDr. Rossy Rojales, Hurray with its trusted suppliers dedicated considerable effort to harmoniously integrate our design elements with the striking exterior conceived by renowned architect Milo Naval. Naval’s signature aesthetic, characterized by the use of organic materials and a preference for neutral color palettes, served as a guiding principle for our interior design approach. We meticulously selected furnishings, artwork, and lighting fixtures that not only complemented Naval’s architectural vision but also enhanced the overall atmosphere of this unique space dedicated to showcasing fine art.
What allows Hurray to do this is our user-centered design process, which brings projects through five key stages—ensuring spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. This comprehensive approach allows the design team to anticipate challenges and tailor-fit solutions to client’s needs.
Blending form and function in interior design demands a thorough understanding of design principles. It is why selecting the right team of professionals is crucial. Your project's success hinges on the expertise and execution of the architects, contractors, and interior designers who bring it to life.
As the field of interior design continues to evolve and expand into new realms and possibilities, it is increasingly important for aspiring architects, contractors, interior designers, and design enthusiasts to closely engage with their clients and the world around them. By keeping up with the latest research and technologies, they can continue to deepen their understanding and design remarkable, inspiring spaces for the future.
