Designing for designers — #HurrayforGibbs

The Gibbs Sisters, known for their free spirited style and bold aesthetic, describe the feeling of being at home as calm, cozy, and carefree. Their home has been in the family for at least 20 years and the last time it had been renovated was in the early 2000s. Looking to spruce up their Living & Dining Room, they’ve turned to us for help.

A room’s aesthetic
definitely affects our headspace.

“A room’s aesthetic definitely affects our headspace,” Chi and Gabs mention this during one of the interviews. Creatives thrive in a space that best reflects their art and individual persona, allowing them to stay inspired and explore ideas even from home.

Through Hurray Design’s Interior Styling Service, Casual Eclectic was chosen as the best fitting theme for the young duo, as it compliments their unique flair. The theme, Hurray’s signature style, is known to be hip, youthful and fresh with supposedly clashing elements that we’ve mixed and matched to create a coherent concept.

Graphic art by the sisters line the buffet table adding pops of color along a white wall

Drop lights hung above the dining area delineate it from the rest of the space. Paired with the warm wood tones of table tops, the warm lights create an inviting ambience perfect for intimate family gatherings.

Playing with the proportions of the room, the dining chair backs were kept low to give the space more verticality and height. Black-coloured metal was added for a sense of informality while keeping the colour palette balanced. Greens and blues from the artwork and collection of glassware add character to the space while the tall dried flowers provide an organic texture that contrasts the clean lines found within the room.

While displaying the sisters’ love for quirky patterns, the achromatic area rug grounds the bright colors of the living area. It also plays second fiddle to the vintage painting they own — a gift to their grandfather in the 70s, balancing the colorful cubist artwork with it’s black-and-white curves.

Contrasting elements styled together reflect the sisters’ dynamic creativity

The living area features streamlined shapes, contemporary lines, curated textures and colours that bounce off of each other. These elements give the room a playful vibe while still adhering to the functionality the space requires.

The fabrics used are not only comfortable to the touch but also cat-friendly. A mirror was leaned against the wall to create an illusion of space while touches of greenery were added to bring the outdoors in. An existing side table and lamp add a touch of sophistication much desired within the space.

Spending most if not all of our time at home this year has forced us to take a closer look at our living spaces. What were once mere nuisances — clashing paint on the walls, out-of-date decor, damaged-but-not-totally-unusable furniture have transformed into loud unyielding signs telling us that we need to rethink our homes. Take it from the Gibbs Sisters! Maybe it’s time to contemplate your personal space and how it affects your headspace.
